Missing the holidays and that seven-day getaway to an exotic paradise that is now no more than a fleeting memory? Laura Goldstein, the creative gem behind BC-based mashu mashu (translated as “Wow, that’s something! in Hebrew), has proven successful of bringing the sand and sea into the present with her 2010 Resort Spring collection.
At various magazines in the past, I’ve had the opportunity to experience Goldstein’s work firsthand and it’s the kind of craftsmanship that makes its wearer feel good. It’s bold, real and cheerful. Best of all, without shying away from colour and detail, the pieces always exemplify their theme. This time around, Rock Star, a part of the collection combines natural agate slices, gold plate enamel starfish with Swarovski crystal centres and freshwater pearls. The Botanical Garden Butterfly pieces are hand-cast with stones like lapis, turquoise, kyanite, amethyst, chalcedony and blue quartz along with pearls and gold plate floral toggles.
I know, I know. Spring is slightly further than just around the corner, but when I looked at this collection in particular, it was like I was on a beach, checking out the wares of some exotic local jewelry designer. The kind you say, “Man, Canadians would eat this up!” about. And then I crank up my oven to get more heat circulating throughout my home.
